Sorry if this is more a setup problem really. But I have a website -
www.xxx.com I can ftp files to the website using eg upload.x.y.com

But if I go to a url in my web browser and I can download from a url - eg
www/xxx.com/downloads/myfile.exe - but I don't seem to be able to connect
via ftp to this file? - or to www.xxx.com ? Is the web browser using a
different protocol to download from www/xxx.com/downloads/myfile.exe? If
not how can I connect to that url via ftp?

Your web browser is probably using the HTTP protocol. And you're uploading
files using the FTP protocol. This is quite a common scenario.

upload.x.y.com has an FTP server on it and probably not an HTTP server.
www.xxx.com has an HTTP server on it and probably not a FTP server.

So the solution is to contact the adminstrators of the site, not the MS
newsgroup ;)
