Before I begin-- please just read through my message
before posting a response, because I'll list the 100
things I've tried and I don't want to waste your time or
mine with the old stuff, lol.

"Explorer has caused an error in wininet.dll"
You can replace "Explorer" with AIM, Msimm (but only when
opening html encoded emails), and several other programs.

I am on a Dell Dimension 4100, Pentium III, 384 mB ram, 1
ghz, using Optimum Online cable modem, Windows ME,
Explorer 6.

this is NOT an invalid page fault or module error, so
please don't give me that KB doc. This is NOT wininit, the
virus.

What I have done so far:
--Replaced the old wininet.dll: I couldn't do it with
windows running, regular or safe mode, so i did it through
DOS on a boot disk. NO LUCK.

--Internet Explorer repair. NO LUCK.

--Reload Internet Explorer: Can't do it because it tries
to log onto net to fix it. NO LUCK.

-- Went back to prior Windows Updat,e thinking maybe the
update loaded bad. NO LUCK.

-- Deleted temporary Internet Folder. NO LUCK.

I'll take suggestions from this point forward. PLEASE
help me out! I need to get this computer up and running
to take it off to college in a month!

Joe,

it sounds to me like one of the other newsgroups would be better for you
than the wininet one, because it doesn't sound like a WinInet issue per say,
although I accept that clearly it is in the WinInet dll that is repeatedly
crashing on you. Unfortunatly I can't advise you on a better newsgroup -
perhaps someone else can.

Other ideas for you to try out:

1. Try a repair of Internet Explorer - sorry, noticed that you've done that.

2. Try installing (or re-installing) the latest service pack for internet
explorer. If you can't connect to the network then see if you can get
someone to download it for you and blow it onto a cd.

3. There is a utility in ME to check your dlls. On later versions of windows
you would open up a command prompt and enter "sfc /scannow". In ME I seem to
remember that there is a GUI interface to drive this, but not having used ME
for years I can't tell you where it is, sorry.

4. Other ideas, at the command prompt enter "chkdsk /r" and then let it
reboot. This will scan your disk for errors. Unlikely to solve your problem,
but you never know - some disk errors can manifest themselves in other
seemingly unrelated errors.

5. Try re-installing ME. I know this sounds extreme (and it is), but if you
don't wipe your disk first then when you install ME it should treat this as
an upgrade. It should keep any configuration settings. I have know this to
cure some ills.

6. Do you have any up to date anti-virus software? There is a selection of
mainly free for personal use anti-virus tools at
http://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/antivirus.htm. I doubt whether the problem
is caused by a virus, but again worth a check. Once you have it all working
its worth looking at a firewall too.

Given that you say you can't download from the internet, I would be inclined
to do a chkdsk and then follow that with a re-install of ME. Just make sure
that you have a copy of any key files incase it goes belly up.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.
